Altendorf focuses on sustainability: street lighting is being converted to LED

An important project to convert street lighting to modern LED technology has begun in the municipality of Altendorf. A total of 27 lights were converted to significantly reduce energy consumption and protect the environment.

Before the conversion, the old lights consumed 5,030 kWh of electricity annually. By switching to the new LED lights, this consumption was reduced to just 2,021 kWh. This means a saving of 3,009 kWh per year, which in turn leads to a reduction in CO2 emissions by 1.3 tonnes.

Technical improvements and advantages

The conventional light sources used previously, such as sodium vapor lamps, were not only less energy efficient, but also inaccurate in their light distribution. A significant portion of the light was unnecessarily emitted in the wrong direction, i.e. into the residents' gardens. In addition, it was not possible to adjust the brightness during low-traffic times, which led to unnecessary energy consumption.

The new LED lights, on the other hand, are equipped with modern lenses and mirrors that direct the light specifically onto the road. This not only reduces light pollution but also improves visibility for road users. Another advantage is the factory-set night reduction, which reduces the light output in quiet night hours and thus minimizes the impact on insects.

Only high-quality lights that meet the funding conditions of the Federal Ministry for the Environment and Consumer Protection were selected for the conversion project. The conversion took place between November 7th, 2023 and March 28th, 2024.

The project is financed by the government of the Upper Palatinate and by the Zukunft-Umwelt-Gesellschaft (ZUG) in Berlin. This support is part of the National Climate Protection Initiative, which has been supporting numerous projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions since 2008. The initiative aims to anchor climate protection measures locally and support both consumers and companies.
