Regensburg district is planning a third high school: Obertraubling as the location!
On October 13, 2025, a crucial meeting of the school committee took place under the leadership of District Administrator Tanja Schweiger. At this meeting, the recommendation was unanimously made to the district council to move forward with plans for a third high school in the district. The location is planned in Obertraubling, whose property is already owned by the district. The decision in favor of the new high school is based on the current development of student numbers and the results of a new school needs planning.
The high pressure for action in the city of Regensburg in particular requires quick action. Forecasts up to 2034 indicate strong growth at the existing high schools in Neutraubling (+840 students) and Lappersdorf (+445 students). The capacity limits of the Neutraubling high school have already been reached. Therefore, a structural expansion at the Obertraubling secondary school is necessary in order to cope with overcrowding. At the same time, the Lappersdorf high school will receive eight new classrooms, which will require a complete five-stage expansion.
Investments and renovations
The district has already acquired 4.37 million euros in funding for digitalization in schools. As part of the digital pact from 2019 to 2024, around 2.1 million euros were used specifically to modernize the IT infrastructure. However, challenges such as rising licensing costs and the high administrative burden for funding programs still remain. These aspects illustrate the financial difficulties that accompany digitalization in schools.
Several projects are being planned to improve the school infrastructure. Renovations of the sports facilities at the Parsberg school center are budgeted with a district share of around 225,000 euros. A general renovation of the Parsberg high school has been delayed and is not expected to be completed until the end of 2027. The Lappersdorf high school will continue to be entrusted with the enclosing of roof terraces, which should also be completed by the end of 2025. A modular construction for the Lappersdorf high school is also being planned from 2026.
Digital education in focus
Digitalization in schools in Germany is progressing, but there are still significant challenges. The ICILS study shows that students' digital skills have deteriorated, which is illustrated by discussions about cell phone bans in schools. School management is increasingly calling for specialist staff for digital education, as 80 percent of those surveyed consider specialized teachers to be essential. There is a relative level of technical equipment in schools, but there are significant differences between the individual federal states.
At the federal level, the “Education in the Digital World” strategy, which has been in place since December 2016 from the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs, is viewed as an action plan for the digital transformation of education. Implementation and progress reports are coordinated by the “Education in the Digital World” (DigiKom) commission, which also aims at specific measures and recommendations for school and teaching development. Progress in the area of digital educational resources is supported, among other things, by the Digital Pact, which will invest a total of 6.5 billion euros in schools by 2024.
The educational strategies and investments, which include both local and national measures, are ultimately intended to help meet the challenges in the field of education and specifically support developments in the digital world.
