New distribution of potassium iodide tablets in the Schwandorf district

The Bavarian government has presented a new concept for distributing potassium iodide tablets in the Schwandorf district. This measure is part of disaster and civil defense preparedness, particularly with regard to the closure of German nuclear power plants. The changes are aimed at better protecting the population in an emergency.

In the event of an emergency caused by foreign reactor accidents or other radiological incidents, the distribution of potassium iodide tablets is organized decentrally by the responsible district administrative authorities. This means that citizens up to the age of 45 or pregnant women over 45 can obtain a folding box containing four tablets at certain dispensing points (ASt). The issue is made against signature on a receipt prepared by the municipality.

Important information for the population

In addition to the tablets, every eligible citizen is given a “information sheet for the population”. Municipalities are required to have a sufficient number of these information sheets available based on the number of eligible residents. Information materials for doctors and pharmacists as well as brochures on how to take the iodine tablets must also be available at the distribution points.

In the event of an emergency, the population is informed by various warning signals. This includes the siren signal, which tells people to turn on their radios and pay attention to announcements. Other information channels include radio announcements, television broadcasts, cell broadcast and warning apps. When potassium iodide tablets are distributed, employees at the dispensing points also inform citizens about how to take them correctly.

For detailed information, a document is available that describes the exact processes and regulations.
