Digital exhibition in Regensburg: CO₂ between a curse and a blessing
The digital special exhibition “CO₂ – The substance of fate” has opened its doors and offers visitors an exciting journey into the world of carbon dioxide. CO₂ is a term on everyone's lips because it is both essential for plant growth and plays a central role in climate change. The exhibition, presented by the Regensburg Energy Agency in its education center um:welt, highlights the complex relationship between this gas and our planet.
Visitors can experience the exhibition not only on site in Regensburg, but also from the comfort of their own home. The exhibition is available as “Scrollytelling” at the address co2.um-welt.bayern. Scrollytelling is an innovative form of storytelling that allows stories to be discovered by scrolling on a website, supported by graphics, videos and animations. This modern style of presentation makes learning about CO₂ both entertaining and informative.
Insights into the exhibition
The digital exhibition complements the existing permanent exhibition in RUBINA, which deals with energy use and its effects on the climate. In contrast, the special exhibition focuses specifically on CO₂ and its history. Questions like “What if there was no CO₂?” or “How does CO₂ affect our daily lives?” are dealt with here. Ludwig Friedl, Managing Director of the Regensburg Energy Agency, emphasizes that there are many misunderstandings about CO₂ and the exhibition aims to clear these up.
A special feature of the exhibition are the practical examples from the region, which show how CO₂ and the climate crisis directly affect us. Experts report on their experiences, such as Christine Hornek, who talks about the challenges for native plant species in times of drought. Farmers like Sebastian Lecuyer also share their experiences and emphasize that traditional farming methods no longer work due to changed soil conditions. Klaus Amann, managing director of the landscape conservation association, points out that more frequent heavy rain events endanger valuable arable land.
The digital exhibition ends with a showcase that offers in-depth videos, interviews with experts and practical tips to improve the way we deal with CO₂ in everyday life. The website was developed by a team from the Regensburg Energy Agency in collaboration with the creative agency C4 from Berlin, which was already involved in the creation of um:welt. The financing was again taken over by the city of Regensburg.
The energy education center um:welt, which opened in July 2021, is an innovative place that offers interactive experiences about energy and the environment on 600 square meters. The exhibition is aimed at all age groups and offers numerous hands-on stations that help visitors understand their role in the climate system and take concrete measures to protect the climate. The um:welt is a joint project of the Regensburg Energy Agency, the city and district of Regensburg as well as in cooperation with the Kelheim district.
For further information, those interested can visit um:welt at Rudolf-Vogt-Straße 18 in Regensburg or contact us by phone at [0941] – 298 44 91 – 25. Also send an email to kontakt@um-welt.bayern is possible.
