Tegernheim accepts the tree planting challenge – a tree for the future!

On September 4, 2025, the community of Tegernheim was nominated for the 2025 tree planting challenge. This initiative was launched by the Neutraubling police station and encourages communities to take active action against climate change by planting trees. Tegernheim has accepted the challenge and has already planted a tree in the local orchard. This action was supported by several people, including Mayor Max Kollmannsberger, and is documented in a video on Facebook.

The challenge is to plant a tree within a week and then nominate other groups to take part. Tegernheim has nominated the Tegernheim Fruit and Horticultural Association (OGV) to participate within eight days. This is part of an overarching movement that is finding more and more followers in various regions, including the Erding district. In Erding, numerous groups are taking part in the challenge, including the Fraunberg fire department and the kbo clinic, and sharing their herbal successes on social networks.

The concept of the tree planting challenge

The tree planting challenge has a similar structure to the Ice Bucket Challenge from 2014, which was intended to raise awareness of the neurological disease ALS. However, this environmental initiative focuses on climate protection and fun. Participants are encouraged to document their actions on platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. This not only promotes awareness of climate protection, but also community engagement and teamwork.

Many prominent personalities and organizations have already made their contribution to the challenge. Mayor Stefan Haberl of Taufkirchen planted an apple tree at a primary school and nominated the savings bank, while the Wasentegernbach fire department prepared a ridge tree for its festival tent. The diversity of the projects shows how creative and committed the citizens in their area are.

Importance of tree planting

The importance of tree planting is evident through the various initiatives such as the tree planting challenge. According to the WWF, naturally planted forests are not only important for biodiversity, but also contribute significantly to the storage of CO2. This ecological function is crucial to combating climate change. WWF highlights that a move away from highly productive timber fields towards diversified forest areas, including mature trees, is essential for the long-term well-being of ecosystems.

In summary, the Tree Planting Challenge 2025 not only brings people together to actively fight for climate protection, but also makes an important contribution to creating healthy and sustainable living spaces. The initiatives at local level, such as in Tegernheim and Erding, show that community spirit and a common goal can inspire people to take action.
