Progress in the expansion of Georg-Schiffer-Straße: closure will be lifted!
Georg-Schiffer-Straße is currently the focus of extensive construction work that has been underway since April 2024. The city administration has now published an update that has good news for residents and road users. The closure in the area of Grundstrasse and Bahnhofstrasse will be lifted a week earlier than originally planned. This means that traffic flow in this section can soon be returned to normal.
However, traffic routing is not regulated by traffic lights, but rather temporarily by traffic signs. This could be an adjustment for some drivers as they have to get used to the new signs. A big thank you goes to Sommer, who and their team pushed the work forward quickly. The citizens also deserve recognition for their understanding during the construction period.
Progress of construction work
However, Georg-Schiffer-Straße remains closed, and the city expects restrictions until 2025. The construction work is part of the fourth and final construction phase of the comprehensive market square redesign, which is financially supported by the federal-state urban development funding program “Growth and Sustainable Renewal”.
In July, the new traffic lights will be installed at the intersection of Georg-Schiffer-Strasse, Bundesstrasse 14 and Grundstrasse and Bahnhofstrasse. These reconstruction measures are designed to improve the traffic situation and ensure a smoother traffic flow. The synchronization of traffic lights is a long-awaited wish of many road users.
However, the construction work also brings with it some challenges. Georg-Schiffer-Straße will be completely closed to through traffic, although residents will still have access to their properties during the first construction phase. Access to the EDEKA store is also not possible, which could be an adjustment for some customers. In addition, the B 14 bus stop in front of the EDEKA market will not be served until further notice.
The diversions are clearly signposted, but pedestrians and cyclists must expect longer routes. The city has announced that the diversions will be adjusted depending on construction progress. The resurfacing of Georg-Schiffer-Strasse is expected to be completed by June 2025 and a construction board will soon be erected to explain the scope of the work.
