Water supply in Ried interrupted: construction work on September 3rd!
On September 4, 2025, significant construction work took place in Ried on Bergstrasse and Leitenweg, which was originally planned for the previous day. According to the Municipal administration, which was signed by Michael Kroul, had to be postponed due to bad weather conditions. The construction work is part of a comprehensive improvement of the infrastructural water supply.
During construction work, the water supply will be interrupted in several places. Residents were urged to stock up on sufficient water supplies to avoid shortages during the disruption. This measure is urgently necessary because the Riedleitung, which has been in operation for over 60 years, is responsible for supplying drinking water to up to 40 percent of the daily needs of the Rhine-Main metropolitan region and must ensure reliable functionality for the people and the economy of the region.
Important infrastructure projects
The importance of Riedleitung cannot be overemphasized. It represents an essential lifeline for the drinking water supply of the metropolitan region. Every year, billions of liters of drinking water flow into the Rhine-Main area, where over 4 million people live. In 2023, the average water consumption was 120 liters per inhabitant per day. In order to meet future needs, Hessenwasser is planning to build a new pipe system that will ensure a sustainable and climate-proof drinking water supply in the Hessian Ried Augsburger Allgemeine reported.
In the context of these developments, it is important that communities and utilities work closely together. Last year, around 230,087,607 cubic meters of water were fed into the networks for self-sufficiency. The construction work in Ried is therefore not only locally important, but also contributes to the future water supply in the entire metropolitan region.
These investments in infrastructure are crucial in order to meet the increasing demands on water quality and availability. The new Riedleitung represents a future-oriented project that secures water supply across generations.
