Regensburg's parents requested: online survey about all-day care

In Regensburg, around 7,500 families receive mail from the mayor inviting them to take part in an online survey. This survey is about all-day education and care options for primary school children. The city administration would like to obtain parents' opinions in order to be able to better plan future childcare options.

The survey will run until the end of September and is aimed at all guardians of children aged zero to five. The Education Department, which is responsible for organizing the care offerings, hopes for active participation in order to get a comprehensive picture of the families' needs.

Legal right to full-day care

From the 2026/27 school year, all first graders have a legal right to care for eight hours per day. This entitlement will be gradually expanded to all primary school children in the following years, so that every primary school child will have the right to full-day care by the start of school in 2029. The city offers various forms of care, including open and restricted all-day schools as well as lunchtime care and after-school care. However, not all childcare options are available at every school, and the options available must be close to the school.

“We are facing a major challenge in planning and coordination,” explains education officer Dr. Sabine Kellner-Mayrhofer. "The issue of all-day care is a top priority for us, as it has a significant impact on the spatial resources in our schools. We also need to recruit sufficient specialist staff. It is important to us that we keep the needs of parents and children in mind despite the time pressure, which is why we are asking for their feedback," she adds.

Survey results and their meaning

The survey not only records the amount of care required, but also the quality and preferred forms of care. The data collected will be crucial to understanding what offerings are in demand at primary schools. "We shape the city with its citizens in mind, so the parents' answers are of great importance to us. We would be happy if many people take part in the survey. In order to reach as many parents as possible, we have had the survey translated into eight languages," explains Mayor Gertrud Maltz-Schwarzfischer.

The online survey takes about 15 minutes and is open until September 30, 2024. All guardians of children born between January 2019 and August 2024 received an information letter with survey access details.
