New waste rules in the Regensburg district: What citizens need to know
Waste disposal in the Regensburg district is facing significant changes that will affect both citizens and the administration. In a recent announcement, the district waste management announced that the regular collection of used tires, which previously took place twice a year, will be discontinued. This decision was made to keep garbage fees stable in the long term and to create a fairer fee structure.
The existing tire collection contract will be terminated on June 30, 2026, meaning the last collection will take place in 2025. The waste management argues that cost-intensive additional services such as waste tire collection are no longer affordable and must therefore be phased out gradually.
Introduction of an identification system for garbage cans
Another important step in waste management is the planned introduction of an identification system for garbage cans. This system is intended to promote the digitalization of waste management and offer benefits to both citizens and administration. The Committee for Rural Areas, Environment and Regional Development already approved the use of chip transponders for residual waste and waste paper containers at its meeting on September 17, 2024.
With this new system, only garbage cans that have a so-called chip nest can be used. This nest is a small recess into which the chip is inserted. The tender for the Ident system is expected to take place next year and full implementation is not expected until January 1, 2027 at the earliest.
Changes to waste containers
The introduction of the identification system also entails a change in waste containers. The 50 liter residual waste bins currently used do not meet the new requirements because they do not have a chip nest and also do not meet the safety standards for waste workers. The Regensburg district will therefore push ahead with the switch to the 60 liter bin as the smallest permitted size.
Owners of 50 liter bins can expect to receive an information letter from waste management next year informing them of the next steps. For further details on the changes to waste disposal, interested citizens can visit the district office's website.
