New recreation area in Hemau: groundbreaking ceremony for adventure playground!
Construction work on a new urban recreation area began in Hemau yesterday. The official groundbreaking ceremony took place between the Volksfestplatz and the forest cemetery. This project aims to create a recreational space that is accessible to all generations and thus improves the quality of life in the community. Planned elements of the recreation area include relaxation areas, nature experience areas and areas for exercise and play. Particularly noteworthy is the first construction phase, which contains a large adventure playground.
The planned playground will cover an area of around 3,200 square meters and combines three themed worlds: an inclusion playground, an adventure landscape and a water playground. Mayor Herbert Tischhöfer emphasizes the importance of the project for nature, recreation, inclusion and community. The opening of the local recreation area is planned for early summer 2026 with a children's festival.
Promotion and participation of citizens
The project is funded by both the federal government and the Free State of Bavaria, which makes an important contribution to climate protection. The citizens of Hemauer were actively involved in the planning through workshops, information events and online surveys. This shows how important the participation of residents is for the acceptance and design of public space.
In Germany, the challenge remains to adequately promote inclusive play opportunities. According to a study by Aktion Mensch, Germany lags behind in international comparison. There is progress, but there is still a lot to do. Exercise and play locations in particular are often inadequately checked for inclusion. Specialist planners and manufacturers have the necessary know-how to design inclusive playgrounds. Political will is crucial for the successful implementation of these projects. Experts encourage people to take advantage of the potential for participation, inclusion and health in public spaces in order to improve the accessibility and usability of playgrounds and thus promote physical activity.
The importance of social interaction
The designated local recreation area in Hemau will not only be a place for exercise, but also create spaces for social interaction. Social participation is of great importance for the well-being, quality of life and health of every individual. The design of public spaces should therefore take into account meeting areas that encourage children and young people to make social connections.
The design of inclusive playgrounds has positive effects on the physical, cognitive and social-emotional development of children. Nature experience spaces also offer opportunities for exercise and encounters without fixed play options. Implementation of the 2008 UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which promotes inclusion and equal participation, remains urgent and requires ongoing community feedback and barrier-free planning.
The construction work in Hemau is a step in the right direction to not only create a new recreational area, but also to promote diversity and inclusion in the community. The inclusion of all groups shows the desire to create a space in which everyone can feel comfortable and actively participate in the community.

The urban recreation area in Hemau not only represents a new leisure location, but also a symbolic sign of inclusion and community building, which will play an important role for the city and its citizens in the coming years.
