Importance of risk management

According to the Bavarian State Office for the Environment, risk management plays a central role in flash floods. To meet the challenges posed by heavy rain and flash floods, a comprehensive set of risk reduction measures is required. In this context, cities and municipalities are required not only to take their own measures, but also to motivate other affected people to take precautions. A comprehensive dialogue between various parties involved is essential.

Flash flood risk management aims to create proactive and targeted preparedness to minimize the negative consequences of flood events. While complete protection from such events is unrealistic, effective preparation can mitigate adverse consequences. For this purpose, municipalities have access to various guidelines and support programs to create integral protection concepts.

There are numerous resources available for further information, including the information map on surface runoff and flash floods that is available throughout Bavaria. This map is a first step towards risk analysis and assessment at the municipal level, as the State Office for the Environment shows.

The priority project in Bernhardswald is an important step towards effective flash flood risk management, which should help to ensure the safety and well-being of citizens in the long term. Further information on this topic can also be found in a special information document provided by the municipality of Donaustauf ( here ).
