Microcensus 2024: 50,000 citizens in Bavaria called upon to participate

In Bavaria, the 2024 microcensus is just around the corner and there is still a lot to do. By the end of the year, around 50,000 citizens will have to confirm their participation in this important survey. The microcensus, a type of small census, provides valuable information about the economic and social situation of the population. In contrast to the more comprehensive census, which is carried out every ten years, the microcensus takes place annually and refers to a representative part of the population.

So far, around 70,000 people in Bavaria have already taken part in the survey. Interestingly, more than half of respondents gave their answers over the phone, while many also used the online option. These different ways to participate are crucial because they ensure that the data collected reflects the reality of the population. The information collected is important not only for statistics, but also for political decisions based on sound data.

How does participation work?

The selection of households to be surveyed is carried out using a mathematical-statistical procedure. First, specific buildings or parts of buildings are selected, and then volunteer survey officers come into play. These people knock on doors and can identify themselves with an ID card in order to act as representatives of the Bavarian State Office for Statistics. After contacting households, they will receive an official letter informing them of the survey and asking them to take part in a telephone interview or an online survey.

A total of 120,000 people in Bavaria are required to take part in the microcensus. So far, around 70,000 of them have fulfilled their obligation to provide information. The majority of respondents chose a telephone interview, while a significant proportion preferred the online survey. The traditional paper questionnaire is being used less and less, which shows that people are increasingly valuing digital ways of communication.

Participation in the microcensus is not only a legal obligation, but also an opportunity to actively contribute to shaping society. The data collected helps to identify long-term developments and improve living conditions in Bavaria.
