Cordula Weimann inspires Neumarkt with ideas for a sustainable future

Cordula Weimann impresses in the ballrooms of the Residenz. The founder of “Grandmas for Future” from Leipzig is presenting her book as part of the Neumarkt Sustainability Week. In her lecture she quotes from the work and deepens some of the content in a conversationRalf Mützel, the head of the Office for Sustainability. The encouragement and applause show that Weimann has his finger on the pulse of the times. Many people want a healthy and vibrant future. She also has some suggestions for Neumarkt.

Sustainability in focus

Around 60 visitors are present this evening. They all want to get out of the “faster, further, higher” trend. Weimann emphasizes that it's about health, nature and a lively environment. “These people are already living in the future because they set off decades ago,” she says. Cities in Scandinavia show how it's done. Promoting pedestrian and bicycle traffic as well as organic food in public facilities leads to healthier citizens and reduces healthcare spending.

Suggestions for Neumarkt

Weimann also has ideas on how Neumarkt can develop further. The structure of the old town is ideal for directing traffic. Parking spaces should be located outside the old town to create space for a higher quality of life. “Neumarkt has the potential to become the most livable city far and wide,” says Weimann.

Health as a focus

The “Grandmas for Future” advocates for happy people in healthy cities. Health is a central theme in their campaigns. Weimann gives figures: 70% of illnesses in the EU could be avoided through a lifestyle change. Unhealthy diet and lack of exercise cause high costs. “We don’t have to wait for the politicians up there,” is one of their messages. “We can develop our self-efficacy and become active here on site.”

A tip for engagement

To gain strength for personal commitment, Weimann has a tip: “Nature provides us with everything we need for life.” This connection to nature gives joy and strength.

The evening is organized by the city of Neumarkt in cooperation with various educational institutions and the senior citizens' advisory board. The regional group of Omas for Future from Regensburg is available to answer questions and distribute brochures with practical tips.
