Willy-Brandt-Straße will be completely closed: major construction site from September 22nd!
From September 22, 2025, Willy-Brandt-Straße in Hamburg will remain completely closed due to canal construction work. This measure affects the section between house numbers 30 and 40 and is expected to last until November 28, 2025. The responsible authorities ask road users to understand the necessary measures to help improve the infrastructure, as Suro City reports.
Construction work on Willy-Brandt-Straße began on August 4, 2025 and is intended, among other things, to renew the road surface between Domstraße and the Deichtortunnel. This extensive measure will last until spring 2026 and also includes the modernization of the sidewalks and cycle paths in this area. During the construction work, two lanes will remain open in the west and at least one lane in the opposite direction, according to NDR.
Restrictions and alternative routes
Some areas of Willy-Brandt-Straße, including the junctions at Brandstwiete and Meßberg, as well as the ramps to Deichtorplatz, will be temporarily closed. In addition, the Dovenfleet will be partially set up as a one-way street to the east. There will be significant restrictions during the autumn holidays when the Deichtortunnel will be temporarily closed. An alternative route via the Oberbaumbrücke and Brooktorkai is available to road users in both directions.
Construction work takes place six days a week and on Sundays and public holidays, with several teams working in parallel at different locations to progress the work efficiently. The greatest restrictions on traffic are to be expected during times when there is less traffic, especially during the summer and autumn holidays.
Infrastructure projects in Hamburg
The numerous construction sites in Hamburg are part of a comprehensive plan to maintain and modernize the city's infrastructure. According to Tag24, such construction work is necessary to improve the traffic situation in the city. Large projects, such as the Hamburg Elbtower, are currently being implemented, which often leads to closures of streets, intersections and tunnels.
The ongoing and upcoming construction work on Willy-Brandt-Straße is an essential part of these infrastructure projects and aims to optimize both roads and the supply through new high-voltage lines that will connect the Mitte and Tiefstack substations. Citizens are encouraged to find out about current construction sites and traffic disruptions in order to plan their trips accordingly.
