Masterplan 2035: Shared future for the Amberg economic area!

As part of a comprehensive development project, the Amberg economic area recently developed an intermunicipal master plan that targets the need for commercial space. This innovative approach was supported by partners from various communities and cities in the region, including the city of Amberg, the communities of Freudenberg, Ebermannsdorf, Hahnbach, Kümmersbruck, Poppenricht and Ursensollen, as well as the Amberg Economic Development Agency. The plan is supported by external experts from the Geoplan Bayreuth office.

The draft, officially titled “Master Plan 2035”, was presented at a joint meeting in the summer and received a positive response. A formal handover to District President Walter Jonas took place on November 13, 2025, at which Mayor Michael Cerny and several mayors were also present. Jonas praised the inter-communal commitment, which is of great importance for the development of the region.

Content and objectives of the master plan

The master plan is based on a detailed inventory of the economic area and was supplemented by extensive company surveys and interviews with the respective administrations. In its entirety, the plan covers central topics such as housing, energy supply, mobility and sustainable development, which are important for the future direction of the Amberg economic area. Karlheinz Brandelik, one of those present at the handover, emphasized that this master plan creates a common basis beyond commercial space planning.

The creation of the master plan reflects the growing need for inter-municipal cooperation, which is also expressed in the publication of the German Association of Cities. This publication, which deals with the planning practice of regional initiatives, illustrates the need for exchange between cities and municipalities as well as the importance of innovative concepts for urban development. It offers a wide range of practical examples for improving the quality of life through effective cooperation between actors in the regions.

The commitment to the master plan and inter-municipal cooperation represents a forward-looking initiative that is intended not only to promote economic development, but also to sustainably improve the quality of life of residents in the entire Amberg region. Given the challenges facing rural and urban areas in Germany, it is crucial that such projects are initiated and successfully implemented.

The partners and those involved hope that this plan will lay a foundation for sustainable development and further increase the attractiveness of the Amberg economic area.
