Discover the secrets of the Hahnbach cemetery church!

On September 14, 2025, a special event will take place in Hahnbach as part of Open Monument Day. The Hahnbach cemetery church opens at 2:30 p.m. in the afternoon to provide interested visitors with the history and cultural insights into burial culture. The free tour is organized by Marianne Moosburger, the Hahnbach local curator, who will present numerous exciting topics.

The focus of the event includes the history of the cemetery church, the special furnishings and the emergence of Christian burial culture in the region. In addition, interesting curiosities that affect both the church and the cemetery are discussed. These aspects not only provide historical perspectives, but also shed light on the traditions and rituals associated with Catholic burial.

Insight into cemetery culture

The cemetery culture in Germany has developed over centuries and includes various cultural expressions. Central elements of this culture are the rituals of individual processing of grief, the burial of the deceased and the design of the graves as gardens of remembrance. In addition, cemeteries often function as social meeting places and cultural venues, which underlines the relevance of these spaces in society.

The origin of the name of the cemetery church is also explained during the tour. In addition, attention is drawn to various aspects of the church's interior decoration and earlier paintings. “Unsolved mysteries and anecdotes related to gravediggers” will also be addressed to simultaneously entertain and inform visitors.

The development of modern cemetery culture, including the differences between medieval and Protestant cemeteries, will be another topic. At a time when the number of urn burials is increasing, it is even more important to reflect on the associated changes in the appearance and in the lived cemetery culture.

The event takes place in the cemetery church, located at Vilsecker Straße 1, near the Upper Gate. Anyone interested is cordially invited to take part in this free guided tour. The event not only contributes to the appreciation of local history, but also to the active cultivation of cemetery culture, which is experiencing dynamic development.
