150 years of the Paartalbahn: Festive train christening at Aichacher Bahnhof!

On October 25, 2025, the 150th anniversary of the Paartalbahn will be celebrated with a festive train christening at Aichach train station. A variety of activities for railway enthusiasts, families and interested parties are on the program, which starts at 11 a.m. The highlight of the event is the naming ceremony of a modern LINT series railcar, which will be named “Aichach”. This will take place during the greetings by Mayor Klaus Habermann and Arnulf Schuchmann from the Bavarian Regiobahn (BRB) at 11:20 a.m., accompanied by the Aichach Town Musicians and a blessing by Catholic and Protestant churches.

The Paartalbahn, which opened in 1875, represents an important connection between rural areas and urban centers. Originally it was used for troop transport and freight transport. As [augsburger- Allgemeine.de](https://www.augsburger- Allgemeine.de/aichach/150-jahre-paartalbahn-geschichte-fotos-im-stadtmuseum-aichach-111974830) reports, Aichach received a connection to the railway line from Augsburg via Friedberg to Ingolstadt on May 15, 1875. Freight service began on May 1, 1875, followed by the first passenger train, which ran on May 15, 1875. The importance of the Paartalbahn as a commuter route is still undisputed today.

Supporting program and special trains

To celebrate, tours of the signal box will be offered starting at 10 a.m. There is also a puzzle question with a competition for historical steam locomotive rides that will take place between Augsburg and Aichach on December 7th and 21st, 2025. The reception building and water house at Aichach train station date from the 1870s and were extensively renovated in 2014. A series of photos shows the history of the station and the Paartalbahn outside.

In addition to the train christening, the city mascot Aichi will also be present at the event. The Knoll Bakery provides food for the guests and entry is free. A photo exhibition that provides insights into the development of the Paartalbahn and the train station can be seen in the Aichach City Museum until November 16, 2023.

History of the Paartalbahn

The development of the railway in Germany began in 1835 with the first locomotive-operated route between Nuremberg and Fürth. This innovation brought faster transportation options, which led to an economic boom. In the following decades the route network grew and in 1870 it already covered 18,480 kilometers. In this context, the Paartalbahn became of central importance for the Aichach region.

The first railway line, which also reached Aichach, was an important step in the history of the region. Particular attention will also be paid to the planned special exhibition in spring 2026, which will show a replica of the Aichach train station from 1909. These events and exhibitions not only address technical developments, but also the social and economic importance of the railway for the region, which was shaped by rapid urbanization and industrialization.
