Ernst Grube: A contemporary witness tells of hope and humanity
The Schwandorf Adult Education Center has launched a special event that will take place on October 25, 2024. On this day, Holocaust survivor Ernst Grube will share his moving memories and experiences from the Nazi era with those present. Grube, one of the last contemporary witnesses, will talk about the horrors he experienced as a child.
The event will be moderated by the book author and expert on right-wing extremism, Birgit Mair. Mair has had numerous conversations with Holocaust survivors since 2005 and will place Grube's stories in a historical context. She will also present pictures and documents that provide insights into his life. The aim of the event is to emphasize the importance of the culture of remembrance, especially at a time when there are fewer and fewer contemporary witnesses.
Ernst Grube's eventful past
Ernst Grube was born in Munich in 1932 and grew up in a Jewish family. At a young age he had to witness the destruction of Munich's main synagogue, which was a drastic experience for him. After being expelled from his apartment, he and his siblings were taken to a Jewish children's home, where he survived while many other children were deported and murdered. In 1942 he was deported to forced labor camps without his parents before he was finally deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto.
The event will take place in the Schwandorf Hospital Church at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free, but advance registration is required as spaces are limited. Those interested can register with the vhs by phone or email. In addition, a thematically appropriate tour entitled “Dark Clouds over Schwandorf” will be offered on the same day at 3:00 p.m., for which registration is also required.
The vhs Schwandorf invites everyone interested to take part in this important conversation and learn more about the history and the lessons from the past.
