Christmas party in Regensburg: Thanks for committed volunteers!
On November 27, 2025, a special event to honor the commitment of volunteers in the area of asylum and migration took place in the “Schreiberhaus” in Regensburg. This celebration, organized by Nasser Aljoumaa, the district's integration pilot, and the integration pilots Iris Wittmann and Nadine Sandner-Neumann, brought together around 50 volunteers.
As part of the colorful program, participants had the opportunity to tie Christmas wreaths under the guidance of a florist. There were many personal exchanges over pastries and punch in the large hall. The vocal ensemble from Hromada e.V. Regensburg, which performed Ukrainian Christmas songs, was particularly enthusiastic. The “Svitanok” ensemble also performed in traditional Ukrainian costumes and created a festive atmosphere.
Activities and offers for volunteers
The volunteers make their contribution to the integration of many refugees through various projects in the Regensburg district. The helper groups support refugees in everyday life, while a sponsorship project and an interpreter pool in Regensburg provide specific offers of help. Nasser Aljoumaa explains that he has been working as a contact person for volunteers in the area of migration and refugees since February 2021. Helper groups also organize excursions and intercultural cooking courses to strengthen the community.
A central part of the support is the work of language mediators who are active in various authorities and institutions. Since the language mediator pool was founded in 2014, around 70 language mediators are available for 26 languages. We are currently looking for language mediators for languages such as Amharic, Ukrainian, Pashto, Tigrinya and others. The language mediators are mostly native speakers and help to overcome cultural and linguistic barriers.
Qualification and further training for language mediators
In order to optimally prepare language mediators for their tasks, the Regensburg District Office regularly offers further training. One such event took place on February 8, 2025 and included the basics of interpreting as well as practical exercises. Regina Prokopetz, an experienced intercultural trainer, led the training. The aim was not only to qualify 14 new language mediators, but also to strengthen their role in the integration process.
Language mediators have specific characteristics that are essential for their work. These include neutrality, impartiality and compliance with confidentiality obligations. The pool is put together through bookings from employees of the district office as well as from daycare centers and schools. Language mediators face the challenge of communicating confidently in German and their respective language and have knowledge of the terminological requirements in the asylum system.
