Mannsdorf: A forest for the future – 2,000 trees for climate protection

In 2017, a remarkable initiative began with the planting of 2,000 trees on a former sports field in Mannsdorf. This campaign, led by the committed climate youth group “WirWollenMehr” and the climate protection manager Franz Hien, has developed into a thriving mixed forest over the years. What was once a simple project has now transformed into a living symbol of climate protection.

Mayor Christian Kiendl, who was involved at the time, was enthusiastic about the positive development: “It is impressive to see how a small idea has become an important nature project for our region.” These words reflect the joy and pride the community feels for this green miracle.

A forest that does good

The newly created forest not only has an aesthetic function, but also plays an important role in environmental protection. Every year it binds around 5 tonnes of CO₂, which helps to improve air quality. The tree species planted, including oaks, limes, beeches and firs, have developed splendidly and now form a healthy and diverse ecosystem.

Franz Hien, who launched the planting campaign, emphasized the importance of patience and long-term commitment: "The forest we see today is the result of hard work and continuous care. The commitment of the young generation and the community has more than paid off." This statement highlights the importance of supporting projects over time to achieve sustainable results.

A place for everyone

In the coming years the forest will continue to grow and develop. Information boards have now been set up for walkers and nature lovers, providing information about the different tree species and their tree sponsors. These panels are not only educational, but have also become an integral part of the forest, inviting visitors to learn more about nature.

The transformation of the former sports field into a living forest is a powerful example of how community engagement and sustainable practices can bring about positive change. The citizens of Mannsdorf can be proud of what they have achieved and of the future that this forest holds for the region.
