Ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony: New cycle path bridge for more safety in Marienthal!
The ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a new cycle path bridge between Marienthal and Stefling took place on October 31, 2025. This important project aims to close the cycle path gap in the Bavarian network for cyclists. According to [Regenstauf.de](https://www.regenstauf.de/communice-news/news/artikel/ Feierlicher-spatenstich-in-marienthal-626), numerous representatives from politics and administration were present, including Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Wüst, who represents a representative of Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter, as well as members of the Bundestag such as Martina Englhardt- Kopf and Peter Aumer.
Other invited guests included Tobias Bäuml, the head of the State Building Authority, Jakob Scharf, the deputy district administrator of the Schwandorf district, as well as the mayors Josef Schindler from Regenstauf and Benjamin Boml from Nittenau. The new bridge, which will have a span of 75 meters, will be implemented as a steel cable-stayed bridge with two pylons. The Free State of Bavaria is the developer, represented by the Amberg-Sulzbach State Building Authority.
Improving cycling infrastructure
The construction of the new bridge is part of a broader project that continues the Regental cycle path until just before Marienthal. The last cycle path junction to Nittenau is now being created, and the cycle path will be routed east of Marienthal over the Regen using the new bridge structure. These measures are intended to increase safety for cyclists who previously had to travel 1.6 km on the winding and dangerous state highway 2149. The cycle path will be 2.50 m wide, while the structure will be 3.50 m wide to meet the needs of modern cycling. According to StBaas.Bayern.de, the total length of the project is 1.6 km and the cost is around 5.8 million euros.
The bridge is scheduled to be completed in 2027. 75% of the total construction costs of 5.9 million euros are funded by the “Federal City and Country” program. The Free State of Bavaria's own contribution is around 1.5 million euros. This construction measure contributes to improving safety and quality of life in the region, which is also anchored in the goals of the Bavarian Cycling Act, which came into force in August 2023.
Cycling strategy in Bavaria
As part of this strategy, Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter has drawn a positive conclusion after over 400 km of new cycle paths have been built since the beginning of 2023. The goal includes the creation of 1,500 km of new cycle paths by the end of 2030. According to a report by Bauen.Bayern.de, measures to promote safe cycle connections on state and federal roads are also being pursued. A particular focus is on the Climate State of Bavaria cycling offensive and improving road safety for cyclists.
The project in Marienthal is therefore not only a locally important project, but also part of a comprehensive strategy that is intended to promote cycling throughout Bavaria and make it safer.
