Remembrance Day
As Wikipedia informs, since 1952, Volkstrauertag has been celebrated two Sundays before the first Sunday of Advent. It was introduced in 1919 by the German War Graves Commission to commemorate the fallen soldiers of the First World War. The first memorial hour took place on March 5, 1922 in the Reichstag, and the first official day of mourning was celebrated on March 1, 1925. Originally set for Reminiscere Sunday in the Weimar Republic, the day served the various political circumstances and was ideologically reinterpreted under the National Socialists in 1934.
Today, Remembrance Day not only commemorates the millions of victims of the First and Second World Wars, but also the victims of war and violence in the present. In a broader context, the Bundeswehr's commitment to missions abroad is now also being recognized. The central memorial hour takes place in the German Bundestag and traditionally includes speeches by the Federal President.
Affected holidays surrounding Remembrance Day
In addition to the upcoming events, All Saints Day and All Souls Day, which play an important role in the Catholic Church, are relevant. All Saints Day is celebrated on November 1st and commemorates all saints. All Souls Day follows on November 2nd to pray for all those who have died. While All Saints' Day is a public holiday in several federal states, such as Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, All Souls' Day is not recognized as such. In contrast, Remembrance Day is considered a “quiet holiday.”
In Germany, other days of commemoration, such as Memorial Day in the USA or Remembrance Day in the British Empire, also have similar functions by commemorating the victims of war. The goal of these days remains to raise awareness of peace and the horrors of war, as NDR reports.
