New route to school in Hemau: Major construction site brings important changes!
In Hemau, significant changes will come into effect for the new school year 2025 with regard to routes to school and parking options near the schools on Mönchsberg. This is the result of a major construction site to expand and renovate the existing educational facilities. As hemau.de reports, access to the primary and middle school is now only possible via the main entrance of the middle school, which can only be reached via the stairs next to the thermal power plant.
Parents who bring their children to school by car are requested to use the designated parent stops next to the Tangrintelhalle. There the children can get in and out safely and reach the school building via a secure footpath. Students who come on foot should avoid the Klopferlweg and instead use the footpath in the town hall garden. Access via Laubenhardweg remains temporarily closed.
Increased security measures
To ensure safety, the police will be increasingly present at the start of school and will support the students. This is particularly important as safety on the way to school is a key issue. Wikipedia describes school route safety as the remaining risk of danger for children on their way to school, which includes not only traffic hazards, but also threats from other students or adults. Measures such as the introduction of school streets, an initiative that was recently discussed in detail in an online event on March 19, 2025, are important for this.
The event, organized by the Future Network Mobility NRW, aimed to make temporary road closures in front of schools safe and legally feasible. Among other things, the legal basis and the involvement of schools and parents were discussed. These discussions are crucial to further improving the safety of children on their way to school. In the context of safety on the way to school, it should be noted that measures such as education about traffic dangers were introduced in the early 20th century and the number of accidents has been reduced since then.
Parking lot closures from September
In addition to the changes already mentioned, the parking spaces on August-Glockner-Ring in the gym area will be closed on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. from September 16, 2025. Outside these times, the parking spaces can be used normally again. This measure will help improve traffic flow in front of schools and ensure the safety of children on the way to school.
The responsibility for the safety of children lies not only with the authorities, but also with the parents. agfs-nrw.de emphasizes the importance of timely and correct communication as well as the involvement of parents and schools in safety measures. Without a joint effort from everyone involved, school route safety cannot be effectively increased. The upcoming changes in Hemau are a step in the right direction to promote children's safe learning and movement in traffic.
