Waste tire collection in the Regensburg district: Collection ends in 2026
There will soon be a significant change in waste disposal in the Regensburg district that could affect many citizens. The regular collection of used tires, which currently takes place twice a year by the waste disposal companies Meindl and Pöppel, will be discontinued on June 30, 2026. This decision was made at the Environmental Committee meeting on September 17, 2024, where members approved the district administration's proposal.
The reasons for this measure are varied. The district waste management argues that the costs for waste tire collection are significant and that garbage fees for citizens must be kept stable in the long term. In order to achieve this, cost-intensive additional services, such as waste tire disposal, should be gradually phased out. This could help make fees fairer.
Statistics on waste tire collection
A look at the numbers shows that a total of 530.56 tons of used tires were collected in 2023, which corresponds to around 66,000 tires. The associated costs amounted to around 227,840 euros. For comparison: In 2022, 492.1 tons were disposed of at a cost of 213,100 euros and in 2021 508.25 tons were disposed of for 216,748 euros.
Another problem with the current pickup system are the so-called loopholes, which lead to higher costs. In many surrounding communities there is no free waste tire disposal, which means that citizens from neighboring districts and businesses take advantage of the opportunity to dispose of their old tires free of charge in the Regensburg district. They often leave the tires in front of other people's properties shortly before the collection dates, which further complicates the situation.
In order to meet these challenges, District Administrator Tanja Schweiger was authorized to terminate the existing contract as soon as possible. This means that the termination will take effect on June 30, 2025, with a final cessation of collection on June 30, 2026.
