Strengthening social cohesion: Bavaria's rural regions in focus

An exciting research project is being launched in rural regions of Bavaria that deals with social cohesion. The Nuremberg University of Technology has taken on this important topic and plans to carry out comprehensive investigations by 2026. The project is supported by the Bavarian State Ministry of Finance and Homeland and aims to capture citizens' opinions and ideas in order to strengthen social cohesion.

But what exactly does social cohesion mean? Basically, it's about how people in a community treat each other, feel connected and work together for the good of all. In order to better understand these aspects, three surveys and four in-depth projects are being carried out in various rural areas of Bavaria. Voices from villages and small towns, from old hands and newcomers, as well as from young and old are heard. If you want to find out more about the project, you can visit the official website:

Participation and process

All citizens living in rural communities are warmly invited to take part in the surveys. These are easily accessible online via the project website. For the in-depth projects, the team will specifically address various people and organizations throughout Bavaria in order to collect a wide range of opinions and experiences.

The first survey, which looks at community connectedness, starts on September 14th and runs until October 14th, 2024. It is a great opportunity for citizens to contribute their thoughts and ideas and to actively participate in shaping their community.

Why join?

The results of this research should be of interest not only to citizens, but also to politicians. By systematically evaluating the data, social cohesion in rural regions is made more visible and can be specifically promoted. Anyone interested can already view the results of the first survey online as well as a brochure about support for seniors through neighborhood help.
