New Café DorfTalk in Schalkenthan delights guests from the region
The new “Café Village Talk” in Schalkenthan is very popular. Christine and Franz Geilersdörfer, the café operators, are enthusiastic about the positive feedback from their guests. These come not only from the surrounding area, but also from further afield, to take a seat in the inviting guest room, on the terrace or in the cozy arbor. There are over 100 seats available in total, which creates a pleasant atmosphere.
The idea for the café came about in 2019 when Christine Geilersdörfer thought about barrier-free access to the existing dining options. The “Schalkenthaner Stub’n” has been a popular place for parties and celebrations since 2004. However, in conversations with friends and family, it quickly became clear that a new café would be an exciting opportunity to expand the dining offering. In addition, the butcher's shop, which was also used for direct marketing, was to be downsized.
Challenges and solutions
A first plan was made in 2020, but the corona pandemic called implementation into question. Christine remembers that she and her team seriously considered whether they should pursue the project. However, after the number of infections decreased, they gained new courage and began renovating the former pigsty. They had to get rid of a lot of junk, tear out the old floor and redesign the room.
Finding craftsmen didn't turn out to be easy. The Geilersdörfers attached great importance to employing local craftsmen. With the “Villschreiners” from Anton Wiesnet, they quickly found a suitable partner who shared their vision of sustainability. Old tavern chairs were refurbished by the Decker carpentry shop from Sulzbach-Rosenberg and now shine in new splendor.
The materials used in the café are also particularly environmentally friendly. The seat cushions and curtains are made from felted sheep's wool, which is not only robust but also recyclable. Even when selecting the coffee, the operators placed emphasis on ecological aspects and chose beans from northern Thailand that support local investment.
The gastronomic offerings are well received by guests. Highlights include a weekly breakfast on Thursday, the monthly Zoiglabends on the second weekend and the afternoon café, which is open several days a week. The Geilersdörfers can also offer fresh meat and sausage products from their “Schalkenthan farm shop”, while homemade cakes and tarts round off the offering.
The team consists of part-time workers and mini-jobbers who support the service. Christine Geilersdörfer talks with a smile about an amusing incident when a preschool child had to use the disabled-accessible toilet and was frightened by a picture of a cat. “When she looks at me, I can’t picky!” the child shouted, which created a heartfelt moment.
