Mering is planning a citizens' forum: cycling concept for a safe future!

On Tuesday, November 18, 2025, a citizen information event on the planned cycling concept will take place in the multi-purpose hall, Luitpoldstraße 8, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The organizer is the Kaulen city and traffic planning office. At this event, citizens have the opportunity to obtain comprehensive information about the progress and measures of the cycling concept. This reports mering.de.

In recent years, numerous measures have been implemented in the region to improve the cycling infrastructure. A central project is the tunnel through the Georgsberg, which was designed for cyclists and pedestrians. The undertaking began in June 2023 and is scheduled to be completed in December 2024 with a total cost of around 7.4 million euros. Around 4.48 million euros come from funding from the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport, as the city of Passau reports ( passau.de ).

Important developments in cycling

Another planned measure in the cycling concept is the creation of a cycle path along the St2110 from Neuburg Dommelstadl to Passau Kohlbruck. In addition, the Ries pedestrian and cycle path will soon be expanded to include a further section of 1.3 kilometers between Neureut and Patriching. Construction work for this is scheduled to begin in summer 2025.

The city has also introduced innovations in traffic management. One-way streets were opened to bicycle traffic, including Adalbert-Stifter-Straße and Ostuzzistraße. In order to increase safety for cyclists, cycle lanes and protective lanes will be renewed, markings to reduce speed will be implemented and the road surfaces on Schönleitnerweg will be renovated.

Funding and infrastructure

A central element of cycling promotion is the federal government's special “City and Country” program, which supports investments in cycling projects in municipalities. The aim is to increase the attractiveness of cycling through better conditions and greater traffic safety. The measures include the creation of safe cycling networks and the expansion of modern parking facilities and bicycle parking garages, such as balm.bund.de can be read.

In Passau, additional lockers with charging options for cyclists are being set up in order to accommodate electrically powered bicycles. These lockers will be installed at Ludwigsplatz in spring 2025. Overall, a comprehensive signage system for cyclists will be implemented that will significantly improve orientation in the city.

The strategic planning of the cycling concept was already approved in September 2019. Since then, the administration has been working on implementing all proposed measures to continuously increase bike-friendliness in the region.
