Fairtrade community Mering: Breakfast for climate justice and trade

The Fairtrade community of Mering once again invited people to a special event: a fair breakfast that not only pleased the palate, but also stimulated the spirit. In an inviting setting in space, numerous citizens gathered to learn more about an important topic - climate justice. The speaker Elisabeth Englram, who works at the Augsburg Environmental Education Center, led those present through the complex connections behind this term.

Englram explained that climate justice is a challenging issue because it often lacks a clear principle of responsibility. This means that it is difficult to determine who should pay for the damage caused by CO2 emissions. This lack of clarity can lead to environmentally harmful behavior being viewed as legitimate. A central point of her talk was the connection between climate justice and trade justice. She emphasized that true climate justice cannot be achieved without fair trade practices.

Challenges for small farmers

Another important topic that Englram addressed was climate-related crop losses, which particularly affect small farmers in the countries of the global south. These losses represent a significant challenge and require urgent binding government regulations and financial support from the countries responsible for the emissions. The audience was affected by the difficulties these farmers face and it became clear that there is a need for action.

After the informative lecture, guests were able to enjoy a delicious buffet that featured fair trade and regional products. Petra von Thienen, who welcomed the guests on behalf of the world shop, thanked the many helpers who contributed to the success of the event. Michael Dudella, spokesman for the Fairtrade municipality of Mering steering group, encouraged those present to actively participate in the working group. Mayor Florian Mayer praised the citizens' commitment to fair trade and sustainability in the region. Everyone present agreed that it is important to act according to the motto “look at the world and do something at home”.
