Tirschenreuth in conversation: New clinic building as an opportunity for the region?
In a surprising press conference that was called at short notice, Mayor Franz Stahl of Tirschenreuth expressed his thoughts on a possible new hospital building. The reason was a report from “Neuer Tag” at the end of August about the use of the old folk festival site in Weiden for the construction of a new clinic run by Kliniken Nordoberpfalz AG (KNO). Stahl made it clear that a new building does not necessarily have to take place in Weiden, but could also be realized in Tirschenreuth. “The distances are comparable,” he explained, pointing to the equivalent routes between the two cities.
The mayor wanted to use his statements to initiate a discussion and express his opinion on the issue. He expressed concerns about the financial situation of Kliniken AG and described a large new building as currently unsustainable. “It is absurd to discuss a location when the financial conditions are not right,” said Stahl. Nevertheless, it is legitimate to ask whether the new building could also be realized in another location, such as Tirschenreuth. Ultimately, it is not just about replacing the hospital in Weiden, but also about the entire region of the North Upper Palatinate clinics, which also includes the Neustadt/WN and Tirschenreuth districts.
Location debate and feasibility study
Stahl was dissatisfied with the current discussion and noted that it seemed as if the municipality wanted to compensate for urban development deficiencies with new buildings. He also demanded that a feasibility study not only focus on pastures. “The KNO is only strong if the facilities are evenly distributed throughout the region,” he emphasized. This could help to improve health care throughout Northern Upper Palatinate.
During the conversation, the mayor also discussed the possibility of closer cooperation with clinics in Upper Franconia. “We have to work together on solutions; the big challenges can only be overcome as a team,” said Stahl. However, when asked about a specific location in Tirschenreuth for the new building, he was unable to give an answer. However, he confirmed that he would raise the issue with the KNO supervisory board and would like to bring Tirschenreuth into play as a possible location.
The press conference ended with Mayor Stahl confirming that he wants to stand up for Tirschenreuth and actively promote the discussion about the new clinic building.
