Renovation of the gym and swimming pool in Schwarzenfeld: funding notification presented

The city of Schwarzenfeld is about to take a significant step in the modernization of its sports facilities. On September 25, 2024, the long-awaited funding notice for the renovation of the gym and swimming pool was handed over. This marks the beginning of a project that has been in the planning stages for years and is now finally being implemented.

State Secretary Rolf Bösinger from the Federal Ministry of Construction delivered the decision, which was a reason for joy for Mayor Peter Neumeier and the members of the market town council. Already in 2020, serious structural defects and technical problems were discovered in the hall, which were estimated at the time to cost around 3.5 million euros. However, architect Markus Maier, who was entrusted with the planning, quickly realized that the challenges were far more extensive.

Funding and support

The renovation is supported by a federal funding program that was launched in August 2022. This program aims to modernize municipal facilities in the areas of sports, youth and culture. Thanks to the preparatory work, the city was able to quickly submit an application for funding. The total costs for the project amount to 8.8 million euros. Of this, the Free State of Bavaria will cover 4.2 million euros, the federal government will contribute 1.58 million euros, and the Karl Knab Foundation will provide 500,000 euros. The city's own contribution amounts to 3 million euros.

There were repeated discussions in the market town council about the high costs of the project. However, Mayor Neumeier pointed out that closing the hall would have been an unacceptable alternative. “We would not be able to forgive ourselves for closing this institution,” he emphasized and thanked the market councilors for their courage in pushing the project forward. The closure would have had a particularly negative impact on children, young people, seniors as well as the water rescue service and various clubs.

It is currently planned that the gym and swimming pool will remain in operation until spring 2025. Construction is scheduled to begin during this period and is estimated to take approximately two years. In the meantime, interim solutions for swimming and other sporting activities are being sought to meet the needs of users.
