Winter service in Regensburg: Owners must secure sidewalks

Winter is just around the corner. The city of Regensburg is preparing for the cold season. Traffic disruptions due to snow and slippery conditions cannot be ruled out. The city administration reminds property owners of their duty to secure public sidewalks. This obligation applies to all owners of developed and undeveloped properties in urban areas.

Obligations of the property owners

All property owners must clear and grit the sidewalks in front of their property. This also applies to neighboring properties that are accessed via a private road. In the case of heritable building rights, usufruct rights or housing rights, the holders of these rights are responsible. The sidewalks must be cleared along the entire length of the street front. If there are several adjacent streets, the sidewalks on each street must be secured. If there is no sidewalk, an area of 1.50 meters at the edge of the road must be cleared.

Obligation to clear and scatter

The security obligation applies on working days from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sundays and public holidays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Pavements must be cleared of snow and ice sheets. If they are slippery, they should be sprinkled with dulling agents such as grit or sand. The use of road salt is prohibited except in certain cases such as stairs or steep inclines.

Snow deposition area

The city has identified a storage area for snow on the Lower Wöhrd. This area is intended for snow that cannot be deposited on the edge of the road or sidewalk.

Interesting information about winter service can be found on the city of Regensburg website. There you will find information about the brochure “Mobile despite snow and ice” as well as the current safety regulations. Staircases on bridges will also be closed in winter 2024/2025. These closures affect the areas that were already closed last winter. Partial closures cannot be implemented for liability reasons.
