Major construction site on the A 93: closures and diversions from November 22nd!
As part of a comprehensive infrastructure project, the A 93 motorway between Regensburg-Süd and the Saalhaupt triangle is being completely renovated. This significant operation, launched on November 18, 2025, includes several closure phases, which will take place in particular from 8:30 p.m. on November 22, 2025 to 6:00 a.m. on November 23, 2025 and from 8:30 p.m. on November 29, 2025 to 6:00 a.m. on November 30, 2025. During these times, traffic on this section will be significantly restricted, especially in the direction of Regensburg/Hof between the Hausen and Regensburg-Süd junctions, such as the Thalmassing community reported.
The reasons for the closures are varied. In addition to the need to install three new gantries for a traffic control system, work with cranes is also to be carried out from the Munich direction. The diversions for traffic are clearly communicated: A necessary diversion on the U29 via KEH 10 to Saal a. d. Danube to B 16 and on to the Regensburg-Süd junction set up. Another diversion option, the U31, leads from Bad Abbach to the Regensburg-Süd junction.
Restrictions and diversions
However, the restrictions are not just limited to the main traffic on the A 93. There will be multiple restrictions at the Regensburg-Süd junction due to the road renewal in the coming months. For example, from the end of March to mid-May 2025, the exit from Munich will not be possible, and the entry towards Munich will also be made more difficult by a STOP point, as there is no space for an acceleration lane on the A 93 bridge over the B 16. The Pentling tank & rest facility will also be affected, where exit from Munich will not be possible from June 26th to the beginning of August 2025 and the entrance lane to the A 93 in the direction of Regensburg will remain closed until mid-October 2025, as the Regensburg Autobahn website explained.
With regard to the Bad Abbach junction, the exit coming from Munich will not be usable in the period from May 23rd to mid-September 2025, which can be avoided by using the replacement exit at the Regensburg-Süd junction. These are just some of the challenges that await motorists as major rehabilitation work is carried out on this busy stretch of highway.
Background to the renovations
The background to this fundamental renovation is, among other things, that the A 93 has had numerous damages to the roadways since it opened in 1984, which now needs to be repaired. This renovation not only extends over the road surface, but also includes the road substructure at a depth of up to 1.5 meters. The preliminary work on this project began in 2021 and 2022, while the main work on the western carriageway took place in 2023 and the eastern carriageway in 2024. Work on the eastern carriageway is currently taking place until mid-December 2025, reports Statista.
A well-developed transport infrastructure is crucial for economic growth, which is made clear by federal investments in road transport of around 8.47 billion euros in 2023. Overall, these funds flow into the various federal roads and motorways to improve the condition of the infrastructure and counteract long-term damage. The case of the A 93 shows that a long-term plan for renewal is necessary to maintain the safety and efficiency of road traffic.
