New life for the Altenthann local history museum: renovation for more culture!

On November 20, 2025, an important meeting of the Cultural Committee took place under the leadership of District Administrator Tanja Schweiger, in which the redesign of the Altenthann Local History Museum was discussed. The committee unanimously decided to postpone the plans for converting the attic of the multi-purpose hall until the exact space required for the collection has been determined. This decision follows a previous agreement that the ongoing inventory of the collection by the Archives Maintenance Association will continue until at least next year. This is necessary in order to be able to accurately estimate the required capacities.

As a precautionary measure, funds for detailed depot planning should be taken into account in budget planning. During consultations with the State Office for Non-State Museums in Bavaria, it was recommended that the attic not only be used purely as a display storage area, but also that a multifunctional room of around 60 m² should be planned, which should be used for museum educational offers. In order to separate the different possible uses, a solid wall must be installed.

Planning for a modern display depot

The redesign of the local history museum in Altenthann underlines the goal of securing the inventory and improving the accessibility of the exhibits. The Committee for Family, Culture and Leisure decided on the first steps in November 2024 under the leadership of District Administrator Tanja Schweiger. Cultural advisor Dr. Thomas Feuerer suggested converting the attic into a modern display depot, which would offer visitors insights into the museum's work and a selection of exhibits.

An important aspect of the planned redesign is the educational mission, which is to be guaranteed through regular special and traveling exhibitions in various facilities, including cultural centers and schools. Since the decision to redesign about a year ago, over 200 objects have already been recorded and digitized, with Dr. Katja Putzer and Peter Soller work with volunteers on the inventory.

The static analysis by the engineering firm Baumruck + Oswald confirmed the suitability of the attic as a display storage area. In addition to a reception area, exhibition areas for changing exhibits are also planned. The cost estimate for implementing the entire concept is just under 98,000 euros, which also includes cosmetic repairs, the dismantling of part of the vestibule and the renewal of the lighting system. These structural measures met with the approval of the cultural committee, which unanimously approved the renovation.

The current developments in the Altenthann local history museum are characterized by lively cultural communication and an improved visitor experience. Ongoing inventory and thoughtful planning for remodeling are promising steps in this direction.
