A century of life: Regenstauf's former mayor Johann Zelzner
October 6, 2025 marks the hundredth anniversary of Johann Zelzner's birthday. Born in Regenstauf, he left a distinctive mark in the history of his home community after serving as mayor of the Regenstauf market from 1966 to 1996. On the occasion of this milestone anniversary, a photo exhibition will be opened in the attic hall of the multi-generational house, which not only highlights the almost thirty years in office, but also presents the people behind the office. The exhibition can be seen in the town hall from October 7th and is complemented by 21 large-format poster boards depicting the most important municipal milestones, including the municipal reform of 1978, which incorporated eight formerly independent municipalities into the market town. This communication of information is accompanied by the reactions of citizens who highly value Zelzner's commitment and influence on local politics.
A life for the community
Zelzner, who began his political career in the market town council in 1956 after training as a wheelwright and body builder in his parents' business, was elected second mayor in 1958 and took over the office of first mayor in 1966. Under his administration, Regenstauf grew significantly and decisive decisions were made for the future. Zelzner's good contacts with the Bavarian state government contributed to the establishment of numerous companies, with his negotiating skills and determination often being highlighted. Because of his energy, he was nicknamed “Fast Hans”.
Zelzner was also involved in the fire department, where he was commander of the Regenstauf volunteer fire department from 1952 to 1967. His political career was also characterized by long-term membership in the district council from 1966 to 1996 and his role as deputy district administrator between 1977 and 1990. Between 1964 and 2002 he also served as chairman of the special purpose association for wastewater disposal in the Regental.
Honors and legacy
For his services, Zelzner was awarded several honors, including the Bavarian Order of Merit in Silver (1976) and the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class (1991). In 1995 he became an honorary citizen of the Regenstauf market. In recognition of his life's achievements, the “Mayor Zelzner Square” was named after him in 2017. Johann Zelzner died on February 17, 2019 at the age of 93, but his work and services to the community are valued by the residents of Regenstauf and regularly remembered.
The role of mayors like Zelzner has changed significantly over time. Historically, it can be seen that the office of mayor has existed since the Middle Ages, but has continually been redefined following various political and social changes. After the Second World War, the office was once again held democratically. Mayors are now the main organs of the municipality and represent it externally. In Zelzner's case, this role was carried out with great commitment and responsibility, which will also become clear in the celebrations that are now beginning and the processing of his life story.
The exhibition will be an opportunity for residents and visitors of the community of Regenstauf to understand and appreciate Johann Zelzner's significant contributions to the development of their homeland.
