Regensburg's train station forecourt: redesign for pedestrians and cyclists
From September 3, 2024, the northern station forecourt in Regensburg will undergo extensive renovation. The city's civil engineering department has set itself the goal of making this central area in front of the train station more attractive, especially for pedestrians and cyclists. The redesign will also ensure the space is barrier-free, meaning it will be more accessible for people with mobility issues.
An important aspect of the project is the customization of the surfaces. The different areas of the square will be redesigned according to their use. This means that the traffic areas will have different, sometimes colored surfaces. In addition, the uneven granite pavement currently in front of the station building will be renovated and supplemented to ensure safer and more pleasant use. The curbs on Maximilianstrasse will also be raised to a barrier-free level and provided with a new asphalt surface.
Traffic management and new facilities
Although the area remains closed to private traffic, turning around in the western part of Bahnhofsstrasse is made easier by a newly designed turning option. This is intended to improve traffic flow in the area while increasing safety for pedestrians.
Another highlight of the redesign are the new bicycle parking facilities, which are spacious. These are intended to help more people use bicycles as an environmentally friendly means of transport. In addition, trees are planned as “mobile greenery” that will not only provide shade, but also help to beautify the square.
The construction work is scheduled for the period from September 2024 to May 2025. During this time, the station forecourt will be transformed into a modern and inviting environment that meets the needs of users.
