Construction site A 93: thorough renovation from March 2025 – what awaits us?

The A 93 between Regensburg-Süd and the Saalhaupt triangle is being completely renovated. This work has been ongoing since 2021. The highway was opened in 1984 and has two concrete carriageways, each with two lanes. In recent years, damage has occurred that has repeatedly had to be repaired. In order to minimize the risk of full closures, a fundamental renewal of the roadways is necessary.

Planned work in 2025

In 2025, the Regensburg carriageway will be completely renovated from the end of March to December. The work includes renewing the roadway over a length of 11 kilometers. During this time the road towards Munich remains open. This road is only 10 meters wide and offers space for three lanes: two for the direction of Holledau/Munich and one for the direction of Regensburg/Hof.

Traffic disruptions

The traffic routing has an impact on traffic in the direction of Regensburg, Weiden and Hof. There is a high risk of traffic jams in front of the Saalhaupt triangle. Users of the A 93 are asked to stay on the motorway, even if traffic is at a standstill. Bypassing the bottleneck leads to more traffic and longer travel times on other roads.

Restrictions at connection points

There will also be restrictions at connection points. At the Saalhaupt triangle it will not be possible from the end of March to December 2025 to drive from the B 15n directly to the A 93 in the direction of Regensburg. The partial closures at other junctions will be limited in time and, if possible, coordinated with one another. The exact details had not yet been finalized as of the editorial deadline on November 11, 2024.

Traffic management and construction site management

The decision to open two lanes towards Holledau/Munich and only one towards Regensburg/Hof is based on traffic conditions. To the north of the construction section there are sensitive areas that are already heavily polluted. The decision was therefore made in favor of the Holledau/Munich direction.

Space cannot be created for a fourth lane. The work area is only 10 meters wide and is required for demolishing the old roadway and renewing the road surface. It is also not possible to close the A 93 for certain destinations. Motorways are built for national traffic and must remain open to everyone.

Information boards will be set up at the Holledau motorway triangle to provide early information about the bottleneck on the A 93. Motorists from Munich can therefore choose alternative routes.
