Regensburg introduces digital identification system for garbage cans

The Regensburg district is continuing its efforts to digitize waste management. The plan is to introduce a modern identification system for waste containers. This system offers significant advantages for citizens and administration. At the same time, it contributes to fairer charging.

Introduction of the identification system

At its meeting on September 17, 2024, the Committee for Rural Areas, Environment and Regional Development approved the introduction of an identification system using chip transponders for residual waste and waste paper containers. Only garbage cans that have a so-called chip nest may then be used. This is a small recess under the front handle of the container into which the chip can be inserted.

The identification system for the Regensburg district will be put out to tender over the next year. A corresponding manufacturer is then selected. At the same time, the 50 liter “round” bin for residual waste will be gradually phased out in the second half of 2025. All affected citizens will be informed in good time. In addition, both the collection of residual waste and the collection and recycling of waste paper will be put out to tender and awarded again. The current contracts run until June 30, 2026 and December 31, 2026. This means that the identification system in the Regensburg district cannot be fully operational until January 1, 2027 at the earliest.
