Deadline for exchanging your driving license: Act now before it's too late!
The deadline for exchanging paper driving licenses for those born in 1971 and younger is January 19, 2025. Old driving licenses that were issued before January 19, 2013 will gradually lose their validity. The exchange takes place over several years in order to avoid waiting times and overloads at the authorities. Holders of paper driving licenses of the years mentioned are currently asked to exchange their driving license by the deadline.
Important information about exchanges
If you would like to exchange your driving license, you should submit an application to the district office's driving license office in good time. This can be done in person or online. The opening times are Monday to Wednesday from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., in the afternoon by appointment only, and Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. An appointment is required for Thursday afternoon.
Mandatory exchange
Once the exchange period has expired, the old driving license will no longer be valid. Anyone who continues to drive with their old license risks being fined. A health check is usually not necessary. The exchange is purely administrative. The old driving privileges will be converted into the new driving license classes. The newly issued driving license has a time limit of 15 years, while the driving license itself remains unlimited.
Required documents
The following documents are required for the exchange: passport or ID card, a completed application form, the old driver's license and a current biometric passport photo. If the old driver's license was not issued by the current residence authority, an index card copy is required. The cost of the exchange is around 25 euros, plus the cost of the biometric photo.
Voluntary exchange
Driver's license holders who do not yet have to exchange can do so voluntarily at any time.
