The reading start set includes an age-appropriate book, valuable information about reading aloud and useful reading tips. In order to take part in the event, registration is required. This is a step to support early reading education and promote access to literature for all children.

Importance of promoting reading

Good reading ability is crucial for the educational path of children in Germany. This ability not only influences school performance in various subjects, but also active participation in life. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research is therefore committed to various projects to promote children's reading skills and to facilitate access to books regardless of their social background.

The “Lesestart 1-2-3” project has already achieved many successes: 6,500 pediatricians and 5,600 libraries are involved. In addition, over 5 million reading start sets were distributed and 2.4 million book gifts were given out. The funding amount of 41 million euros until the end of 2026 supports this extensive commitment to early childhood reading and language development.

In addition, there are special initiatives such as “Reading Start: Because reading helps us move forward”, which are aimed at refugee children and help them to gain access to the German language more quickly. Projects such as “MENTOR Campus” also support children with reading difficulties through qualified mentors to ensure individual reading support. The importance of digital reading is now also not ignored, so that further training opportunities are offered for library employees. This takes into account the future-oriented approach to education in order to respond to current trends and challenges.
