Spitzlmarkt in Hemau: Tradition meets enjoyment on October 31st
The Spitzlmarkt will take place in Hemau on October 31, 2024. This popular autumn market attracts many visitors. In addition to a colorful range of goods, the focus is on culinary highlights: sweet Spitzl in different variations.
Useful, beautiful and delicious
Between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. the city center turns into a pedestrian zone. The diamond-shaped pastries that give the market its name are available at the Dürr Bakery branch on the town square. Those with a sweet tooth can look forward to delicious cake and gingerbread biscuits. Bratwurst rolls and Hungarian langos provide hearty dishes.
Around 25 market stalls offer a variety of products. Autumn decorations, natural cosmetics and regional products are just some of the highlights. Delicatessen, useful household items such as basketry, brushes and brooms as well as warm clothing for the cold season are also represented. For the first time, a stand is offering All Saints' Day arrangements for the cemetery visit the next day.
The Jura family base has an information stand on site. The “Last Help” caravan also stops at the market. This project by “Letzte Hilfe Deutschland gGmbH” and the “German Society for Palliative Medicine e.V.” aims to bring the topics of serious illness, death and dying into society. Those interested can find out more about questions about the end of life at the caravan. This is part of the “Caring City of Hemau” project.
Road closures
On market day, the area from Stadtplatz to Unterer Stadtplatz will be closed to all traffic from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The diversion takes place from the corner of Stadtplatz/Riedenburger Straße via Riedenburger Straße, Karl-Maag-Straße and Kelheimer Straße to the intersection of Kelheimer Straße/Regensburger Straße.
RVV lines 28 and 66 will be rerouted via Karl-Maag-Straße and Riedenburger Straße. Line 28 can serve all stops. Line 66 cannot reach the Hemau Kelheimer Straße stop. Here Hemau Stadtplatz is the alternative stop.
Market with history
The Hemauer Spitzlmarkt has a long tradition. It emerged from the Wolfgangsmarkt, which has been held on October 31st since 1630. This is a reference to Saint Bishop Wolfgang of Regensburg and the anniversary of his death on October 31, 994. The Spitzlmarkt has been officially listed in the market directory of the city of Hemau since 1972. Spitzl has been on the market since 1996. Previously, they were sold directly in bakeries.
According to tradition, the Spitzl were originally baked as gifts for the dead who rose from the graves on All Saints Day. Later they became gifts of love given to each other by people who were devoted to each other, such as the maid to the farmhand or the farmer to his farmer's wife.
