Driver's license exchange: Deadline for those born in 1971 and younger is ending soon!

The deadline for exchanging old paper driving licenses is January 19, 2025. This particularly applies to driving licenses that were issued before January 19, 2013. The old gray and pink driving licenses are gradually losing their validity. The mandatory exchange takes place over several years in order to avoid waiting times and overburdening the authorities.

Exchange for those born in 1971 and younger

Holders of paper driving licenses born in 1971 or later should submit an application to the district office's driving license office early on. Opening times are Monday to Wednesday from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. A prior online appointment is required for Thursday afternoon. Mandatory exchange

Once the exchange period has expired, the old driving license will no longer be valid. Anyone who continues to drive with their old license risks being fined. A health or other test is usually not required. The exchange is purely administrative in nature. The old driving privileges will be converted into the new driving license classes. The newly issued driving license is limited to 15 years, but the driving license itself remains unlimited.

Necessary documents

The following documents are required for the exchange: passport or ID card, a completed application form, the old driver's license and a current biometric passport photo. If the old driver's license was not issued by the current authority of residence, a copy of the index card is required from the original authority. The exchange costs around 25 euros, plus the cost of the biometric photo.

Voluntary exchange

Driver's license holders who do not yet have to exchange according to the step-by-step plan can do so voluntarily at any time.
