Importance of citizen participation
At a time when issues such as urban development are more on the agenda than ever, involving citizens in planning processes is crucial. Above all, social, economic and ecological issues come to the fore. Citizen participation ensures that community members are informed about planning goals at an early stage and are included in decisions. This formal participation is stipulated in building and planning law, but often offers only limited scope for action if it occurs late.
The city of Hemau aims to counteract this trend by using citizens' meetings as part of an active dialogue. Citizens should be involved in the design of public space and infrastructure. Such initiatives promote communication between citizens and the municipality, which in the long term contributes to social urban development that aims to improve social infrastructure and promote citizen participation.
The exchange at citizens' meetings is not only informative, but also an opportunity for the city administration to receive direct feedback from citizens. This is seen as a valuable contribution to further urban development by integrating citizens' ideas and suggestions into future projects.
