Change your tree: Hemau plants the green heart” for everyone!
The city of Hemau has successfully completed the “Change the tree” campaign, which was launched in the summer. The aim of this initiative was to donate larger deciduous trees from private gardens for a new local recreation area. The response to this campaign was remarkable, with numerous offers not only from Hemau, but from all over Bavaria. Many citizens joined in to contribute to urban greening.
This new local recreation area called “Green Heart Hemau” will be created between the Volksfestplatz and the forest cemetery and is intended to offer a varied recreational area that is accessible to people of all generations. The project focuses on planting as many native deciduous trees as possible to create a sustainable and green environment. The city administration emphasizes that it will take over the organization and implementation of the relocation of the trees.
Relocation instead of new planting
A key reason why the city of Hemau decided to relocate mature trees is the time factor. It takes years for newly planted trees to provide shade. Therefore, a commissioned planning office selected the most suitable trees for transplanting. What is needed are strong, broad-crowned deciduous trees such as lime trees, maples, oaks, fruit trees, ash trees and birches that are around 10 to 20 years old and have a trunk circumference of 20 to 30 cm (measured at a height of one meter).
The first trees are scheduled to move to their new location as early as 2026. Mayor Herbert Tischhöfer emphasized how important it is to involve citizens in the design of this local recreation area. He encouraged citizens to contact the Hemau city administration to check whether a large tree transplant is possible and sensible.
Sustainable urban development in focus
The initiative fits seamlessly into the principles of sustainable urban development formulated by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. These include, among other things, the preservation of biodiversity, the promotion of an integrated approach and the involvement of all urban actors in order to exploit the development potential of cities. Projects like “Green Heart Hemau” not only offer the local population a better living environment, but also make a contribution to global climate and environmental protection.
Overall, the successful campaign by the city of Hemau shows how complex and meaningful citizen engagement can be in connection with municipal projects. The implementation of this initiative will not only beautify the cityscape, but also support projects that promote sustainable development.
