Regensburg: New identification system for waste containers planned from 2027
The Regensburg district is planning an identification system for waste containers to increase efficiency and fairness in fees.

Regensburg: New identification system for waste containers planned from 2027
The Regensburg district is planning to introduce a modern identification system for waste containers. This system is intended to digitize waste management and offers advantages for citizens and administration. The Committee for Rural Areas, Environment and Regional Development approved the introduction at its meeting on September 17, 2024. In the future, waste containers must have a chip nest in order to be used.
Advantages of the new system
The Ident system enables more efficient control. Waste containers that are the wrong size or improperly filled can be identified more quickly. This makes the work of waste disposal companies easier. In addition, the administrative effort is reduced because fee stamps no longer have to be sent. Digital documentation of emptying improves complaint processing. Monitoring the inventory of garbage cans is also becoming more precise.
schedule
The identification system will be put out to tender next year. In the second half of 2025, the 50 liter “round” bin for residual waste will be gradually phased out. All affected citizens will be informed in good time. The current contracts for residual waste collection run until June 30, 2026 and December 31, 2026, respectively. The identification system can therefore not be put into operation until January 1, 2027 at the earliest.
Implementation and costs
A total of around 139,300 waste containers are to be equipped with a chip. The total costs amount to around 468,000 euros. This sum includes the costs for the chips and their installation. In addition, there are around 19,000 euros for the necessary software. The disposal vehicles also need to be retrofitted. These investment costs will initially be borne by the waste disposal companies commissioned. In the long term, the district expects that the investments will be offset by additional revenue from garbage fees.
Information for owners of 50 liter bins
The introduction of the system requires a change in the waste containers. The 50 liter residual waste “round” bins must be converted to 60 liter containers. This affects around 28 percent of all residual waste bins in the district. Owners of 50 liter bins will receive an information letter next year on how to proceed. A collective order for the new 60 liter residual waste bins is offered.
50 liter residual waste “round” bins: Already abolished in most municipalities
The 50 liter “round” residual waste bins no longer meet the requirements of occupational safety. They have already been abolished in many regions. The Regensburg district is one of the few that still uses these garbage cans. Due to low demand, the 50 liter “round” bins are no longer available. The district must now initiate the switch to the 60 liter bin.
Neighborhood bin: sharing containers
The district waste management points out the possibility of applying for a neighborhood bin. The residual waste or waste paper container is shared. The applicable garbage fee can be divided between the applicants. Further information can be found on the Regensburg district homepage.
