New concession agreement in Bernhardswald: Bayernwerk provides electricity!
On August 25, 2025, the municipality of Bernhardswald officially announced the conclusion of a new concession agreement with Bayernwerk Netz GmbH. This contract was signed on July 28, 2025 and regulates the use of public transport routes to supply electricity in the community. Bayernwerk Netz GmbH will act as the sole operator for the electricity supply.
The new concession agreement is based on the Bavarian model concession agreement, which was specifically tailored to the requirements of the municipality. The agreement is intended not only to ensure electricity supply, but also to strengthen basic services for citizens in Bernhardswald. The focus is on the development of consumption-related solutions taking renewable energies into account.
Context of the concession award
The decision on the award of electricity and gas network concessions is currently attracting great interest in many cities and municipalities. The background is that numerous concession contracts will expire in the coming years. The discussion about (re)municipalization in the energy sector is becoming increasingly important. The aim of this (re)municipalization is to strengthen municipal influence on local energy policy, which could also promote the energy transition in the future.
The income that the municipalities receive from the concession fees is of considerable relevance for their financial flexibility. Some communities, including those currently foregoing existing partners, do not feel the need to make changes to the status quo. Nevertheless, decentralized energy supply remains an important topic that can also be implemented without a municipal network operation.
An example of cooperation with established energy providers is the contract with Bayernwerk Netz GmbH, which takes into account both local and supra-regional factors, such as the above-mentioned developments in several communities and cities.
