Frankenburg dice game: historical drama in Sulzbürg

A very special spectacle will be performed in Sulzbürg on August 31, 2024: the “Frankenburg dice game”. This historical drama, which goes back to the time of the 30 Years' War, focuses on the expulsion and persecution of Protestant Christians from the “Landl ob der Enns”. The event promises to be an impressive experience that will take viewers back in time.

Over 100 guests from Franconia have already announced their coming to present the piece on the Schlossberg in Sulzbürg. In a performance lasting around 75 minutes, a true event from 1625 is retold, when the Bavarian occupiers tried to “Catholicize” the Protestant “Landl ob der Enns”. A central element of the story is a gruesome bloody trial that took place on May 15, 1625, in which 36 rebellious Protestants had to gamble for their lives. The losers were executed, illustrating the brutal methods of the time.

A historic event

The “Frankenburger Dice Game” has been performed every two years in the market town of Frankenburg am Hausruck since 1925. These events bring together up to 10,000 spectators to experience the performances on one of the largest open-air stages in Europe. The anticipation for the performances in Sulzbürg is great, and the people of Franconia are prepared to make a lot of effort to perform their piece in the Upper Palatinate.

Dr. Martin Hundsdorfer, a committed supporter of the project, describes the upcoming performances as a “stroke of luck”. He and other members of the community are actively working to organize the event and ensure everything runs smoothly. The mayor of Mühlhausen is also part of the organizational team and has great confidence in the helpfulness of the Sulz citizens who are committed to the success of the project.

The connection between the Frankenburgers and the Sulzbürgers has a long history that began in 2019. Helmut Enzenberger, who comes from “Landl ob der Enns”, initiated an ecumenical parish trip to Frankenburg, which laid the foundation for friendly relations. Konrad Schornbaum, a former pastor from Sulzbürg, emphasizes how strong the identity of the exiles in the region is still alive even after centuries.

The amateur actors from Frankenburg have a tight program ahead of them. After their arrival on Friday evening, Saturday is all about the performances. A dress rehearsal is planned for the morning, followed by two performances in the afternoon and evening. On Sunday, September 1, 2024, an ecumenical service will take place with the dice game group, in which the Catholic priest from Frankenburg will also take part.

“We are particularly looking forward to this service,” says Helmut Enzenberger. He emphasizes the symbolic importance of the meeting, as it bridges the centuries-long divide between Protestant and Catholic rural people. The event will not only be a cultural highlight, but also a sign of reconciliation and shared faith.
