Berching: A community with 43 districts and a growing population

The municipality of Berching, one of the largest in Bavaria, includes 43 other districts in addition to the city itself. A total of 9,587 people live here, spread over an area of around 131 square kilometers. This impressive size makes Berching an important part of the region.

The city of Berching has a population of 3,309 inhabitants (as of June 2023). The smaller districts include Altmannsberg with 83 residents, Biermühle with only 2, and Butzenberg with 8 residents. On the other hand, there are also larger districts such as Pollanten, where 941 people live, and Holnstein with 420 inhabitants. This diversity in population shows the different habitats within the community.

History of the community

The creation of the large community of Berching dates back to July 1, 1972, when the Beilngries district was dissolved and Berching became part of the new Neumarkt district in the Upper Palatinate. As early as January 1, 1972, several formerly independent communities joined the city, including Oening and Raitenbuch. Over the years, other communities were added, increasing the population of Berching from 2,600 to the current number of 9,587. This shows how the community has changed and grown as part of the regional reform.

The last incorporations took place in 1976 and 1978, when communities such as Hermannsberg and Altmannsberg became part of Berching. These changes have not only increased the number of residents, but have also shaped the diversity and character of the community. Today around 3,300 people live in the city area, while the majority, around 6,300, live in the various districts.
