Iberinger Kirwa: Traditional festival with dancing and customs on the weekend

A highlight in the region's Kirwa region will take place next weekend, Saturday 15th to Monday 17th September, with the Iberinger Kirwa. Many visitors experience this festival as a particularly atmospheric event with many customs. The 21 Kirwa pairs have been rehearsing with last year's Oberkirwa pair for a few weeksMarlie's roomfulandNiko Zagel. They practice their dances diligently under the direction of the Catholic Rural Youth (KLJB). On Sunday, September 15th, according to old tradition, they will dance out the tree for the 40th time.

Preparations and celebrations

At the end of the preparations, the Kirwaleut' meet on Friday evening for the helpers' dinner in the youth home. Afterwards the dance dress rehearsal takes place. On Saturday the boys and their helpers have to get up early. In the nearby forest ofGeorge Schmalzlcut down the tree you have already selected. Meanwhile, the girls prepare the wreaths to hang on the tree. By midday the tree is decorated, the year is carved and the hole is dug by hand.

From 1 p.m. all strong boys are required. Under the command ofStefan KohlBring the tree upright with the help of experienced men from the village. The Kirwa officially begins at 7 p.m. in the Brother Konrad Church with a celebratory service. The Hahnbach pastorDr. Christian Schultzcelebrates this service that the Kirwaleut are helping to shape. The Kirwagaudi with the band “Sakrisch” will then take place in the heated festival tent. For the adult audience there is bar service from 9 p.m.

The big event

After the tree is guarded in shifts all night long, the Kirwa boys are called upon on Sunday after lunch. They set out to find their girls in their hiding places. At around 3 p.m. it will be their turn to perform their folk dances on the podium around the Kirwa tree. They choose the new Oberkirwa pair, chosen at random. Dieter & Co will provide the music. The “Sulzbacher Muse” will then play on the festival site and in the tent until late at night. In addition to grilled sausages and draft beer, there is also coffee and home-baked cake specialties.

Kirwa Monday and conclusion

On Kirwa Monday, special caution is required from 4 p.m. The Kirwa bear is driven through the village and tries to smear its victims' faces with soot. At the end, the band “Bayerische Boum” will play hearty music from 7 p.m. The Altkirwa couples also make an appearance. Before the Kirwa tree and many non-cash prizes are raffled off, special attention is paid to compliance with youth protection regulations.
