Electricity meter reading begins: This is how it works in the district!
At the turn of the year, LEW Verteilnetz GmbH (LVN) is carrying out comprehensive meter reading recordings in its network area. The self-reading begins on December 21st, for which many households in the network area are prepared with an information letter in December. Recording by households themselves is an important measure to accurately map electricity consumption and make it easier to bill electricity suppliers. In principle, the household's electricity supplier plays no role in the reading, as the meter reading is forwarded directly to the respective provider, as obergriesbach.de reports.
In apartment buildings, the meter readings are sometimes read by local representatives (OBVs). These OBVs visit the buildings between December 21st and January 20th. You are obliged to identify yourself with a certificate and an identity card. If you have any doubts about the authority of the meter readers, a free telephone number is available to all citizens: 0800 539 638 1. Emails can also be sent to obv@lew.de if you have any questions about meter readings.
Digital and analogue meters
For self-reading, it is important to select the correct code number that is shown on the meter display. For digital meters, the code number 1.8.0 is crucial for the current meter reading, while 1.8.1 and 1.8.2 stand for high tariff and low tariff. When solar power is fed into the LEW network, the meter reading is displayed under the code number 2.8.0, as lew.de explains.
The variety of electricity meters is another aspect that is important for consumers. A distinction is made between analogue, digital and intelligent meters. Analogue meters, known as Ferraris meters, use a mechanical turntable to display the meter reading. These meters have a calibration period of 16 years and are generally inexpensive to maintain. Digital meters, which are intended to replace analog meters by 2032, display the current performance level and store consumption data for two years. For modern measuring devices, the maximum cost is 25 euros per year, as the consumer advice center shows at verbraucherzentrale.de.
Meter reading is an essential part of electricity consumption and billing. To ensure that everyone involved is as informed as possible, whether through self-reading or by addressing OBVs, households should prepare for this process in good time. Current information on self-reading is available on the LEW Verteilnetz GmbH website.
