Mering honors cyclist winners: Over 89,000 kilometers for climate protection!

In Mering, a successful commitment to environmentally friendly mobility was rewarded. The market town took part in the “City Cycling” campaign from May 17th to June 6th, 2026, in which a total of 586 cyclists took part, divided into around 13 groups. During this time, an impressive 89,057.5 kilometers were cycled, which led to a reduction of 14.6 tons of CO2. Mayor Florian A. Mayer honored the best cyclists shortly before Christmas.

The awards were presented in two categories: individual riders and teams. In the individual driver category, Friedrich Meyer from Christustreff Mering shone, taking first place with 1,819.8 kilometers and achieving a CO2 saving of 298.4 tons. This was his second victory. Lorena Sauer-Hruby from Radl-Liebe followed in second and third place with 1,456.9 km and Joachim Pagel (VG + Markt Mering) with 1,219.9 km.

Team results

The team performance was also impressive. What is particularly noteworthy is that all three winning teams were able to improve their results compared to the previous year. The Mering State Secondary School secured first place with 35,691.2 kilometers, followed by the Mering State High School with 16,036.3 km and Christustreff Mering with 10,157.7 km. The impressive overall performance was equivalent to circling the equator 4.8 times.

The “City Cycling” campaign not only offers the opportunity to measure your own performance, but also aims to raise awareness of environmentally friendly driving. Using the STADTRADELN app, participants can track their bike tours via GPS, which increases motivation and contributes to improving the cycling infrastructure. The app is available in multiple languages and allows easy management of the kilometers credited to the team and the municipality.

The numerous participants and the kilometers recorded show that Mering has taken an important step towards sustainability. The diversity of the groups involved, from schools to clubs, makes it clear that cycling together is not only fun, but also has a positive impact on the environment. The competition has further promoted cycling in the community and is sure to continue to attract great interest in the years to come.
